NEXT CLUB MEETING

The next meeting of the Optimist Club of Treynor is planned July 28, 2007 at the Treynor Recreation Area Club House.  LES HARVEY has arranged for breakfast to be prepared for those who order it before the meeting time.  Aaron Poland, chair of the TRA board, will speak.  All members are encouraged to bring a guest and the public is invited.

REPORT OF RECENT CLUB MEETINGS

At the club meeting on 7/14 there were 18 members and one guest present.  President GARY GUTTAU opened the meeting with the pledge and JEFF JORGENSEN led the devotion prayer.

The 50/50 was awarded to JOHN KLEIN (he traded tickets with DOREEN MAYBERRY).  The attendance pot was awarded to DOREEN MAYBERRY.

Several contributions to the Youth Fund were received from Pres. GUTTAU-first for his birthday, second to announce the Luis Palau Heartland Festival, and third to recognize the success of the Treynor girl’s softball team progressing toward the state playoff.  CHAD GUTTAU added a dollar to announce the opportunity to sign up to ride a bus to the Iowa Straw Poll next month.  Also, JEFF JORGENSEN added a dollar in recognition of his 17th wedding anniversary.

Pres. GUTTAU announced dinner reservations for the Charter Banquet of the new Atlantic Optimist Cub were due today.

BOB HIBBARD noted the can and bottle sorting with the Treynor Youth Wrestling group is Wednesday at 5 p.m.

DICK BABER announced he hadn’t found enough response from area Optimist Clubs to pursue a joint contribution to the new Charles E. Larkin Campus Boys and Girls Club facility about to be constructed in Council Bluffs.

GERALD FORRISTALL noted the City of Treynor had received a matching grant from Iowa West Foundation toward the new highway welcome signs.  Some additional fund raising in the community is needed before the project can be started.

JEFF JORGENSEN announced he had discussed a joint fund raising event with the American Legion Post.  They are interested in working together, but the activity has not been determined.

JOHN KLEIN stated that the new high school addition will displace several trees that have been planted over the years during Arbor Day activities with the elementary students.  Unfortunately the trees can only be moved with the largest mechanical tree spade available which has considerable cost, and this is the worst time of the year to be transplanting trees.  So, it is unlikely the trees will be replanted.

A motion to set the official club meeting time to 7:30 a.m. was approved by all in attendance.

At the club meeting on 7/21 there were 20 members and five guests present.  President GARY GUTTAU opened the meeting with the pledge and RICHARD VORTHMANN led the devotion prayer.

The 50/50 was awarded to MILLI HARVEY.  The attendance pot was awarded to JERYL UNDERWOOD, but it was not collected.

JOHN KLEIN added a dollar to the Youth Fund to announce a conservation tour to Missouri to look at managing pasture for livestock and wildlife habitat.  Pres. GUTTAU put in a dollar to get LARRY KRAMER to tell about his job.  KRAMER is working for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Bureau of Horticulture and Farmers Markets at a seasonal job inspecting farm market vendors in western Iowa for compliance with the Farm Market Nutrition Program for WIC and seniors.

Thanks to BOB HIBBARD, GARY and CHAD GUTTAU, JEFF JORGENSEN, BILL VORTHMANN, LARRY KRAMER, JOHN KLEIN, and GARY FUNKHOUSER for helping the youth wrestling group at a ‘heated’ can and bottle sorting.

Pres. GUTTAU circulated a thank-you card from Lea Hartigan for the scholarship she received.

LARRY KRAMER asked for volunteers to fill the remaining slots on the Westfair gate service activity on Thursday the 26th.

LES HARVEY announced the club meeting next week will be at the TRA club house and breakfast will be available to order before the meeting.  HARVEY also announced he is working on Newsletter advertisements and is looking for few new advertisers.

JOHN KLEIN reminded members to be looking for Bingo prize items needed during the Treynor Days activity.  Pres. GUTTAU noted he needs a group to lead preparations of the Saturday night meal during Treynor Days.

A NEW CLUB FOR RECREATIONAL SHOOTING

Bill Orr of rural Treynor is a National Rifle Association instructor and has a passion for target shooting.  He organized a youth club under the Scholastic Clay Target Program rules, and the new Treynor club has eight youth participating in recreational shooting.  Orr explained the club requirements are that the youth be in high school, maintain school academics, and have completed a hunter education course or Boy Scout shooting merit badge.  Other nearby clubs are in Glenwood and Harlen.  Orr stated none of the youth had ever seen trap or skeet shooting before joining the club.  Yet, they achieved 2nd and 3rd place in competition at the Shelby County High School Trap Meet.

IMMIGRATION LAWYERS ARE IN DEMAND

Cynthia Hess of Tulsa, OK grew up near Treynor and introduced her family and aunt in attendance.  Hess left Treynor to pursue higher education and is now a lawyer and a certified public accountant working at private practice in Tulsa.  Hess explained she takes on work associated with taxes, small businesses, bankruptcy, estates and probate, and immigration.  Hess has a number of immigration cases and observed that immigration has become a political football leading to m! ore rules and more work to assist aliens to become US citizens.  She noted there are now three departments covering different aspects of immigration.  The Citizen Immigration Service handles the administration of becoming a citizen.  The Immigration Custom Enforcement is responsible for law enforcement within the US.  The Custom Border Patrol is responsible for the borders of the US.  Hess said the citizenship process has become more complicated and time consuming, a bonus for her profession.
